PLA vs PETG: Which Actually Matters for What You're Printing

Ask three people which plastic is "better," PLA or PETG, and you'll get three confident, contradictory answers, delivered with the certainty usually reserved for sports arguments.

Neither one is better. They're built for different jobs, and using the wrong one is how good designs fail.

PLA: The Reliable, Slightly Fragile Overachiever

PLA is the material most desk decor, display pieces, and indoor accessories are built from, and for good reason. It prints crisp, holds fine detail, and behaves predictably on just about any printer.

  • Sharp detail retention — great for intricate shapes and clean edges
  • Low warping, easy to print reliably
  • Rigid, which is exactly what you want until you need flex

The catch: PLA gets brittle under stress and genuinely unhappy in heat. Leave it somewhere hot enough and it will warp, soften, or just quietly give up. It's an indoor material pretending, sometimes, to be an outdoor one.


PETG: The One That Actually Wants to Go Outside

PETG trades a little bit of that crispness for real durability. It's tougher, more impact-resistant, and handles heat and moisture far better than PLA does. If PLA is the reliable overachiever, PETG is the one that shows up in worse conditions and doesn't complain.

It's a better choice for anything that lives near a window, rides in a car, or gets handled roughly on a regular basis — think functional hardware, not just display pieces.


The Test That Actually Matters: Where Does It Live?

Forget brand loyalty to a material. Ask one question: does this object spend its life on a shelf, or does it spend its life in the world?

Sort of, and it's worth being precise about the difference. PLA+ is still fundamentally PLA — a tougher formulation of the same base material, closing some of the gap without changing its personality. PETG is a genuinely different plastic with different chemistry and different behavior.
